Distinguishing Feature: THE NINES - Free
The Henry Art Gallery,
15th Ave NE & NE 41st St, SEATTLE
Saturday, July 26, 2008 - 12:05:00 PM
Many thanks to the kindly Karyn G!

THE NINES consists of three short films, each featuring the same actors in different — and sometimes overlapping — roles.

“The Prisoner” tells the story of a troubled television star (Ryan Reynolds) who finds himself under house arrest, with his chipper publicist (Melissa McCarthy) and disillusioned next-door neighbor (Hope Davis) providing his only links to the outside world. Mysterious events lead him to question whether one or both women are deceiving him about the nature of his incarceration.

“Reality Television” is a half-hour episode of “Behind the Screen,” a Project Greenlight-style documentary series tracking the process of creating a network television drama. Having shot the pilot, creator/ showrunner Gavin Taylor (also Ryan Reynolds) faces post-production with the help of his best friend (and lead actress) Melissa McCarthy and development VP Susan Howard (Hope Davis).

“Knowing” finds an acclaimed videogame designer (also Ryan Reynolds) and his wife (Melissa McCarthy) facing car trouble deep in the woods. Their daughter (Elle Fanning) uncovers information which leads to a difficult and irrevocable choice.

Together, the three stories form a single narrative that explores the relationships between author and character, actor and role, creator and creation. Alternately funny and unsettling, THE NINES is like a riddle where the answer is the question: “How does it all add up?”

Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera, Blake Lively and Alexis Bledel reunite onscreen this summer as the lifelong best friends audiences fell in love with four years ago.

Based on Ann Brashares best-selling series of novels about four young women who share an unbreakable bond through the unpredictable events of their lives, THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2 catches up with Tibby, Carmen, Bridget and Lena in the months following their first year of college. Having been apart all year, their plans for the summer will take them even further along separate paths as each continues to experience the freedom, love, choices and challenging life lessons that mark their individual journeys toward adulthood. Now, it will take more than a hurried note or even a treasured pair of pants passed back and forth among them to keep their lives connected.

Feeling displaced at home with her mother expecting a new baby, and disappointed that her friends opted to spend the summer away, Carmen (America Ferrera) accepts a chance invitation to work backstage at a theater festival in Vermont. There, she surprisingly finds herself thrust into the spotlight for the very first time and simultaneously becomes the focus of the play’s handsome young leading man.

Tibby (Amber Tamblyn), meanwhile, remains in New York City to wrap an NYU film project while cautiously taking her relationship with Brian McBrian (Leonardo Nam, reprising his role from the first film) to the next level. When an unexpected crisis complicates everything, she must finally face her fear of getting close if she wants to let love in.

Bridget (Blake Lively), still struggling with the loss of her mother and questions about her past, travels to Turkey for an archeological dig before realizing that the truths she needs to uncover are buried closer to home.

And Lena (Alexis Bledel), separated from first love Kostos (Michael Rady) and studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, meets a free-spirited fellow art student (Jesse Williams) who forces her to choose between holding on to her memories or mending her heart and pursuing an exciting new love.

For Tibby, Carmen, Bridget and Lena, communication was always as easy as breathing. Now, new priorities and rapid changes make it harder for them to keep in touch. Messages are sometimes missed… or misunderstood.

But when it matters most, they will still reach out to those who know them best. Finding a way to share their experiences as they always have, with heart and humor, they will come to value more than ever the immeasurable power of their friendship.

Special Event: Exposed: ALTERED BY ELVIS w/ Tiffany & Jayce Bartok - Free
JBL Theater @ EMP,
325 5th Ave N (at Seattle Center), SEATTLE
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 7:00:00 PM
Many thanks to the brilliant team of Jayce and Tiffany B!

Warren Etheredge of The Warren Report welcomes filmmakers Tiffany and Jayce Bartok, producer Joelle Carter and producer/cinematographer/editor Andy Bates for an exclusive post-show discussion and salute to The King.

EMP|SFM, in partnership with The Warren Report, presents a new film series, EXPOSED: Inside Film at EMP|SFM. The series includes new films, cult favorites and classic sci-fi and music films. Each screening is followed by a behind-the-scenes look through an interactive discussion with actors, directors or screenwriters associated with the film. In July, ALTERED BY ELVIS will be screened followed by a conversation with filmmakers Tiffany and Jayce Bartok. Local film connoisseur Warren Etheredge will host the evening.

ALTERED BY ELVIS is a documentary exploration of lives deeply and permanently
affected by Elvis Presley. As a society we know everything there is to know about Elvis Presley, but what about those he left behind?

ALTERED BY ELVIS follows those who have been imprinted, fathered, fulfilled and
even destroyed by the King of rock and roll. The love for Elvis is contagious, and
everyone knows someone that claims to be – “Elvis’ number ONE fan”. However,
what if we dig much deeper to find the untold stories of the people he left behind...
the ravages of pop culture. We will follow these individuals home and show the
viewer their own lives. How they literally walk with Elvis - in his shadow, with his
ghost and in his light - still to this day. We will hear Larry Geller’s recounting of
styling Elvis’ hair for the star’s funeral and hear about the outrageous tales of
devotion from fans ... and the reason why Jimmy HATES Elvis.

Most certainly we will see what it is like to have been truly ALTERED BY ELVIS.

Arriving in New York from her hometown of Portland, Oregon with her BFA in Musical Theatre from University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Tiffany Bartok appeared in several productions around Manhattan, her favorite being the starring role in Eurydice at the Storm Theatre. She has achieved success as a makeup artist, painting the faces of a variety of celebrities from Daphne Rubin-Vega to Rue MacClanahan. Recently, she starred as Hayley Mills' daughter in Red Sky Pictures' and Vinyl Foote's debut collaboration, "Stricken", a short film written and directed by Jayce Bartok. She and Jayce premiered ALTERED BY ELVIS at the Memphis International Film Festival.

After appearing in numerous films and television shows as an actor, most notably Richard Linklater’s SUBURBIA, John Frankenheimer’s ANDERSONVILLE and Tom McCarthy’s THE STATION AGENT, Jayce
Bartok
was inspired to write and direct, “Stricken”, a short film starring Hayley Mills which made its world premiere at the Vail Film Festival. Eager to embark on a larger project, he produced and directed ALTERED BY ELVIS. THE CAKE EATERS, Jayce’s deeply personal feature screenplay, completed production in July of 2006, directed by Mary Stuart Masterson and starring Bruce Dern, Kristen Stewart, and Aaron Stanford. LIVINGSTON AVENUE and TINY DANCER, Jayce’s newest screenplays, are currently in development. With one produced feature script and an acclaimed documentary under his belt, Jayce steps into the realm of feature directing with THE WEDGES, a stark, gritty drama set in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina in the 1980’s.

Andy Bates has been creating award winning work for such companies as
Rubbermaid, The Hoover Company, Invista, PGRDi, EDS, AMD and First Data for the past 10 years. During this time Andy was also recognized for independent projects such as the Best Cinematography award for his collaborative work in the 48 hour film festival short, “Wired”, and filming and editing the Steve Almaas & Ali Smith’s music video “Moving In Your Sleep” which was featured on the Paisley Pop label's "Stand-Ins for deciBels' A Tribute to the dB's" CD. With his wife, Joelle Carter, they founded Blarma Productions, a company that develops movies, commercials and music videos.

Joelle Carter is an accomplished actress and producer, and has been acting in film, TV, and theater for over a decade. She can be seen in many projects including the soon to be released thriller COLD STORAGE, cult favorite HIGH FIDELITY, blockbuster AMERICAN PIE 2 and indie winners such as SWIMMING, LISA PICARD IS FAMOUS and JUST ONE TIME. In addition Joelle has starred in many television projects including last falls NBC show “Inconceivable”, “Law & Order”, and
many more. She’s also worked on national commercials for companies such as Barilla, Comcast and Cingular.

Join Warren Etheredge of The Warren Report for his earth-bound interview with the high-flying Paul Feig, as the two discuss the author's new book,
IGNATIUS MACFARLAND: FREQUENAUT!

After being teased one too many times, Ignatius MacFarland decides to build a rocket. Maybe extraterrestrials are nicer than his classmates! But when his rocket takes an explosive wrong turn, Ignatius ends up in another frequency run by former English-teacher-turned-dictator, Chester Arthur. Mr. Arthur has taken the art, culture, and advancements of our world, shared them with this new frequency, and convinced the creatures around him that he’s a genius. It’s up to Iggy and Karen, another trapped earthling, to expose Mr. Arthur for the fraud that he is – and to hopefully make it home alive.

Part comedy, part science fiction, and part fantasy, this debut novel, with line art by talented newcomer Peter Chan, makes being a geek, well, kind of cool.

Paul Feig is the creator of the critically acclaimed TV show, Freaks and Geeks, and is currently the Co-Executive Producer of NBC’s The Office. He is also the author of the adult memoirs Kick Me and Superstud. When he’s not exploring new frequencies, he lives with his wife in California.
